Maji-Tech Drilling More Wells in More Regions
Maji-Tech Engineering - WorldServe's borehole drilling partner - continues to expand its capacity in East Africa.
I recently spoke with David Bueno, Maji-Tech’s Executive Director, as he and his colleagues departed from a meeting with U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) representatives in Kenya. The meeting concerned providing drilling capacity for USAID projects and emergency drought relief in the region. Over an unsteady but clear connection through a Kenya cell phone, Bueno provided a positive update of Maji-Tech’s growing operations.
“We are expanding and diversifying,” Bueno said. “We are currently in [the capital city] Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and the Ngorongoro region. We are also looking to have a more permanent presence in the areas of Dodoma and Mwanza.”
Currently Maji-Tech has 8 high-capacity drilling rigs within Tanzania. A drilling crew accompanies each rig, able to drill about one well per week. This year the company is expanding into Kenya with two rigs and drilling crews. Eventually Maji-Tech will be replicated and expand into other African nations.
By diversification, Bueno means the company is going beyond drilling to also provide water storage, treatment, and distribution capacity. Addressing more components of the water solutions package enables communities to translate their new water source into a clean, safe, and adequate supply. The best and most visible results include the successful growth of crops, availability of clean water and sanitation for medical clinics, and safe water for primary school children during the long, hot school day.
The 7 water wells Maji-Tech is currently drilling in Northern Kenya were funded by The Angel Foundation, a charitable extension of international Christian broadcasting company God TV.
“We were asked to drill in northern Kenya because we were available and nobody else wanted to do it,” Bueno said. With an enormous unmet need for water, increasing capacity to drill, and a willingness to serve in the most difficult and hard-to-reach areas, Maji-Tech is poised to deliver clean water to thousands of people.
