Statistics
$1 can give one person clean water for ONE WHOLE YEAR!
In the year 2000, the United Nations made the Millennium Development Declaration. This was a commitment that by the year 2015, all nations will have worked together to meet 8 critical Millennium Development Goals
The seventh target includes this pledge from all 191 UN Member States: "[We will] reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water."
WorldServe agrees that the need for clean, safe drinking water is extremely urgent. Did you know that:
* Over 5,000 people die everyday due to unsafe drinking water
* 1.1 billion people lack access to clean water, that's 1 in every 6 people
* 2.6 billion people lack access to basic sanitation
* Progress in sub-Saharan Africa is lagging behind. Despite the fact that access to improved sources of water increased from 49 to 58 percent between 1990 and 2002, this falls far short of the progress needed to achieve the MDG target of 75 percent coverage by 2015. If the current trend continues, sub-Saharan Africa will not meet the target.
