Cuban Hospital Gets Much Needed Equipment
Cuba has been the scene of both vibrant culture and extreme poverty. Today, however, it is the poverty of this nation’s people that overwhelms those who visit.
In September, WorldServe partnered with three incredible organizations (Assist International, James River Assembly, and The Pentecostal Assemblies of Cuba) to donate a cardiac care monitoring system and an entire, fully equipped, intensive care department to the William Soler Children’s Hospital in Havana, Cuba. This project would be valued at $750,000-$1 million if done in the United States.
The William Solar Children’s Hospital is the foremost children’s hospital of the country. All of the most serious and challenging medical cases are brought to this hospital. The doctors and nurses are exceptional caretakers and completely dedicated in their work.
This project, providing much needed medical equipment, was done in the name of Pentecostal Assemblies of Cuba, a group of 3,000 churches. Compassion ministry such as what was provided through this project, has gone a long way in helping the Cuban church, granting them favor in their local context. The Ministry of Donations, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Medical Equipment and the Director of North America Division of Cuba, all were impressed and thankful for the donation.
The leader of the hospital, Dr. Selman, has become a close friend to Assist International and John Bongiorno, president of WorldServe. Dr. Selman was so grateful that the donation would lift the hospital to a new level of health care.
It is expected that the new equipment will be instrumental in lowering the death rate of the children who are admitted to the hospital. The entire hospital staff was very excited about these additions to the medical facility.
The Equipment Provided:
The hospital is now fully equipped with Intensive Care and Critical Care equipment. With generous donations from GE, the three partners provided six new full perimeter cardiac care monitors and six step down monitors for post surgical care. Other equipment donated and installed included two ventilators, an echocardiography ultrasound, a general ultrasound, two baby warmers, two incubators and six oak wood bassinets. Training, medical supplies and accessories were also provided.
