WorldServe has identified the region of West Pokot, Kenya as a water-stressed area in need of access to clean water and sanitation. This area of Kenya is called home by three different tribes numbering about 10,000 people in total — the Pokots from Kenya, the Turkana also from Kenya and the Karamojong from Uganda.

West Pokot is known not only for its desperate need for water, but also for its history of conflict. With no access to clean water for themselves or their cattle, the people of Pokot have endured years of fear and violence in competition for what water does exist. Quite simply, they are just trying to survive amidst scarcity, drought and famine.

It’s a troubling situation, but we know how to bring both clean water and reconciliation to West Pokot. The answer is to drill community water wells that will meet the needs of the people. We are also working with church, community and government leaders to share a message of peace and reconciliation.

To date, we have drilled 4 water wells in the West Pokot region. We are believing for enough support to drill 9 more wells, for a total of 13 to adequately meet needs in West Pokot.
